DAVID BOOTH

• WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO GET OUT OF THE RETREAT?

I wanted to hear new voices, find alternative perspectives, explore different practical approaches and perhaps add new songwriting tricks to my toolbox. I wanted to answer some questions: Can I write to order given a specific brief and a short timeframe? Can I successfully collaborate with a stranger? And yes, I wanted to embrace the ‘retreat’ element and 'get away from it all' to truly give my creativity some space to breathe and grow.

• WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST TAKE AWAY?

I’ve been writing songs for 30 years, for both myself and as part of my work. But sometimes the doubts creep in. The Knoydart week has given me a new belief that I really can do this thing!

• WHAT WAS YOUR HIGHLIGHT?

Towards the end of the week, suddenly feeling the power of what we’d all experienced, the camaraderie, the creativity, and allowing a wave of emotion and tears of joy to wash over me under a star-filled, cloudless night sky.

That and the debut performance of the Murder Ballad written by Susie Ledge & Ian Blake. Just astonishing! :-)

• WHAT THREE WORDS SUM UP YOUR TIME AT THE RETREAT?

Intense. • Life-enhancing.

• CAN YOU SHARE ANY FUTURE PLANS / COLLABORATIONS / GIGS?

Joe Nelson has already accepted an offer to perform an opening slot for a gig that Kelly Bayfield and I had lined up, and he's going to come down to my studio in Suffolk where we’re going to work on one of his new songs. I’ve also got Susie Ledge and Ally McErlaine confirmed as guests to appear on a new album I’m making.
