PHOTOGRAPHING THE ULTIMATE WILDERNESS
Imagine spending a week making photographs in a place that has rarely been photographed before?
Somewhere remote, remarkable and truly unique. Well now is your chance…
Known as Britain’s last great wilderness, the Knoydart peninsula offers a landscape like no other. Situated on the far west coast of Scotland, adjacent to the Isle of Skye, there are no roads in and no roads out so access is only by boat or, for the more adventurous, a two-day hike – it really is a truly magical place. You could almost go all day without meeting another person!
The Knoydart Photography Retreat has been given exclusive permission to access un-touched landscapes and, alongside the Knoydart Rangers, you will spend six days photographing this unique wilderness with award-winning photographer Julian Calverley.
Below is a selection of recent photographs taken by Julian in Knoydart.

ABOUT JULIAN'S MASTERCLASS
Julian has always preferred to work with small groups, hence our workshops are designed for a maximum of six participants only.
This approach simply provides a more intimate and memorable experience. Participants benefit greatly by having more focused and quality time with him and more physical space with which to work in the landscape.
Julian will run daily master classes on many aspects of photography. Broadly speaking he'll discuss and explore the Art, Mindset and Process of landscape photography.
Keynote presentations and discussions will include:
• INTRODUCTION : A JOURNEY INTO LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY
I’ll talk about my career as a professional advertising photographer and how this lead to my passion for landscape photography.
• AN APPROACH TO LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY
I’ll share my approach to landscape photography, from both a technical and psychological point of view.
• THE USE OF FILTERS
I’lll discuss and illustrate my use of filters, in particular the use of neutral density (ND) grads.
• INSPIRATIONS AND THOUGHTS ON HOW TO CREATE A BODY OF WORK
I’ll talk about the work that has inspired me over the years and explain the process and journey that led to my award-winning book North Northwest
• SHOOTING PANORAMIC LANDSCAPES
I will discuss my approach to panoramic work, using both the shift and panning methods.
• POST-PRODUCTION
I’ll explain my approach, thought process and technique to post-production.
If you decide to book a place on the workshop, then REGISTER YOUR INTEREST first and we’ll arrange for you to have a one-to-one conversation with Julian beforehand to find out exactly what it is you hope to gain from the week.
This workshop is supported by the ALPA Academy and is a part of their programme of ambassador lead events.
It's important to point out though, that you do not need to be an ALPA owner, or medium format owner, to attend the Knoydart Photography Retreat.
Hans Keist, the CEO of ALPA Cameras, who will be on hand during the week, to answer questions and talk about the company’s ethos and exciting future.Working with ALPA ambassadors worldwide, the academy’s aim is to educate and inspire existing owners of ALPA equipment and also those who are simply considering moving across to a medium format camera system. Through the community and events of the ALPA Academy we seek to become better seers of the world.
A ONCE IN A LIFETIME SCOTTISH ADVENTURE
You will be staying in Inverie which is the main village on the remote peninsula of Knoydart, home to approx 110 residents. You will all have your own bedroom in an historic house, perfectly situated on the shores of Loch Nevis - which is Gaelic for Heaven. And heaven it is. You could lose yourself for hours just looking out of your bedroom window across the loch!
Your stay is fully catered by Janey de Nordwall (founder of The Knoydart Retreat Ltd) who has prepared a wonderful home-cooked seasonal menu, for all dietary requirements, utilising the delicious local produce – especially wild venison for the meat eaters! Daily full-cooked breakfasts, packed lunches or hot soups for your outdoor adventures, baked afternoon teas and a two-course dinner each evening. Everyone dines together around the large table in the dining room and, after dinner, you can all relax around the open fire in the sitting room. We’ll also be taking you down to The Old Forge (Britain's more remote pub!) for a locally brewed pint and where the residents often play impromptu Celtic sessions.
ALL WEATHER ALL TERRAIN
As Scotland can be known for offering four seasons in one day, this will be an all-weather, all terrain photography adventure.
Below is the house that you stay in.. .and below that is the view of Inverie village from the house!

• Epic
• Bloody brilliant
• Unique
It’s an unbelievable location! (and so was the weather) but just as important was the chance to make new friends and share good times whilst talking about our shared passion of landscape photography”
