BOO HEWERDINE.jpg

The acclaimed singer-songwriter, performer and record producer Boo Hewerdine joins us as our Writer in Residence for 2022. In a glittering career spanning several decades Boo has written songs for such major artists as KD Lang, Sia, Paul Young, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, David McAlmont, Natalie Imbruglia and is perhaps best known for his long time collaboration as producer and songwriter with three time BRIT award-winning artist Eddi Reader. It was his International hit song Patience of Angels for Eddi that brought Boo his Ivor Novello nomination in 1995.

As a producer he has worked with such international artists as The Corrs and Chris Difford (from Squeeze) and was invited by Nick Hornby to write music for the soundtrack of the film adaptation of his book Fever Pitch. Former founder and front man of the much-loved eighties group The Bible, Boo still tours regularly playing to sold out houses of both fans and songwriters alike.

Described by the BBC as "one of Britain's most consistently accomplished songwriters" and Nick Coleman of The Independent on Sunday as "one of the best songwriters we have".

We are honoured to welcome Boo to The Knoydart Songwriting Retreat.

SHELLY We're thrilled that Shelly Poole is joining us.  She is a multi-platinum selling British singer and songwriter who has achieved international success in an ever-increasing variety of musical settings. The daughter of Brian Poole of the classic 1960s group The Tremeloes, Shelly formed the chart-busting band Alisha’s Attic in the late nineties with her sister Karen. Alisha’s Attic scored 4 gold and platinum selling albums and a string of hit singles.

Shelly is a highly respected award-winning songwriter and has worked closely and had hits with talents as diverse as Janet Jackson, Roachford, Massive Attack, Jack Savoretti, Mark Ronson, Gary Barlow, Westlife, Ronan Keating, Boyzone, Paloma Faith, Michael Gray, Zucchero, Giorgio Moroder amongst many others. Shelly also continues to write with, produce, and mentor new and emerging artists.

We are delighted to announce that singer, composer and musician Jon Boden will be our Writer In Residence for our Folk & Traditional songwriting retreat.

Jon has become the standout performer of his generation of traditional folk artists, but whose repertoire extends far beyond the boundaries of the genre. Most recognisably he was the lead singer and one of the principle arrangers of the multi award winning Bellowhead. Over 12 years, Bellowhead achieved a level unmatched by any other band in English traditional music in the last three decades, performing and selling out hundreds of venues across the world, including notably the Royal Albert Hall.

Jon has received eleven BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, more than any other musician, including Folk Singer of The Year at the 2009 BBC Folk Awards.

Outside of folk, he has composed music for both theatre and film, most notably two Royal Shakespeare productions at Stratford, Merchant Of Venice (2008) and A Winter’s Tale (2012).

In 2019 he was awarded two honorary doctorates and made Doctor of Music by Durham University and Doctor of the University by the Open University. A consistent live performer either solo or with his band Jon Boden & The Remnant Kings, the response is overwhelmingly standing ovations and sold out shows.

We are proud to be hosting one of the foremost names in English folk music as our Writer in Residence for our 2021 ‘Folk & Traditional’ songwriting retreat.
